In our previous post, we began discussing a recent domestic violence case in which a Seattle endocrinologist murdered his partner and their child at the couple's First Hill apartment. The doctor now faces the possibility of the death penalty, though prosecutors are still determining whether to seek that result.
As we noted in our last post, domestic violence is a problem not only among heterosexual couples. Homosexual couples struggle with it as well. Sometimes the struggles can be even greater for homosexual couples in such relationships.
One aspect of separation that homosexual couples often deal with is the uncertainty in not knowing how civil institutions will respond to their situation. Particularly where there are abuse or violence problems, parents who are not legal or adopted may face great uncertainty in how their relationship with their child or children will be once their partner leaves.
According to the Northwest Network, the gay community has historically been afraid to discuss the issue of domestic violence. And while that has begun to change in the last 15 years or so, there is still ambivalence about the issue. Oftentimes family members notice a violence problem, but don't know how to address it without harming trust and respect.
Seattle Weekly notes that, between 1997 and 2010, there were five homicides involving same-sex couples in Washington. But that number is likely higher since murders involving same-sex partners were only tracked when law enforcement or new sources explicitly made the intimate relationship clear. That according to a Domestic Violence Fatality Review conducted by the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence. There were reportedly 750 domestic violence murders involving heterosexual couples during that period.
